S2 Cheers on the Mets at Citifield

School in the Square celebrated the start of Trimester 3 on Thursday with a school-wide trip to Citi Field! After our initial visit to Citi Field in September, students returned to the familiar stadium to cheer on the Mets. Two trimesters later, students say the Mets are more than a favorite team - they are an inspiration. “I look up to [Mets Third Baseman] Jose Reyes,” says Armando Nuñez, sixth grader and Third Baseman on S2’s Founding Baseball Team. For Chameiry Marmolejo, S2 Founding Softball Player, softball is a passion. For this team player, “It was interesting to see [the Mets] all working together. Even though they lost, they worked hard,” she notes. During the game, students pointed to the batting cage. “Remember when we went in there?” Emely Quero asks excitedly. “Look, there’s Mr. Met!” Anthony Sanchez points to the Mascot from which all students have an autograph. Genesis Osario smiles and looks at the close-up image on the big screen. “Remember when it said ‘School in the Square’ up there?” Steven Estrella nods and asks another question: “Who wants my cotton candy?” Students pass the food around. They share hot dogs, crackerjacks, nachos, french fries and popcorn. The students jump and cheer when the Mets score in the fourth inning, but the loudest cheers are captured on the big screen when the cameraman pans across the crowd. “It’s us!” the students cheer. Devin Polanco’s jaw drops for a second before he smiles, while Brandon, Oscar, Isaia and Daniel dance in the background and Gianni leads the chant: “LET’S! GO! METS!”
