S2 Dance Team Members at the Y

An exciting invitation from our friends at the 92nd Street Y brought S2 students on a trip to a dynamic dance performance on Tuesday. This special experience invited students to participate in the contemporary performing arts scene through a series of diverse dance-fusion pieces and face-to-face discussions with dancers and choreographers from around the world.

Both S2 staff and students from School in the Square’s co-ed Hip Hop Dance and STEP Teams were proud to represent the school and learn how classical dance and cutting-edge choreography combine to  inspire new possibilities for self-expression.

Students inquired about the relationship between choreography and musical selection after the third piece, a solo dance in which the performer used props to tell a story about developing confidence to share her true, inner self. The dancers - including the performer and S2 STEP and Hip Hop members - agreed that the music montage of Bach and Debussy was as moving as the movement in the piece.

Students again appreciated the role of music in the Hip Hop dance finale, applauding the DJ along with the dancers. Students applauded yet again when they learned that renowned DJ L. Niño - Luis Niño - was mixing the music manually during the dance performance!

“I loved the Hip-Hop finale,” said S2 Scholar Jelys. But she decided the second piece - the duet - was her favorite. “It showed connection and relationships,” she observed. Jelys noted the dancers’ remarkable strength and grace in that piece. “She looked strong,” Jelys remembered. “To do that with another person is lit,” she smiled. “It takes strength but
you can do it,” she affirms.
