Welcome Breakfast

School in the Square welcomed its founding families on September 8th and 9th with a breakfast on the roof, followed by a day of team building and “getting to know you” activities for students. Each day, more than 100 people joined us for breakfast. Many students arrived nervous for the transition to middle school and left with many new friendships.

We pause to thank everyone who re-arranged your work and life schedule to meet and celebrate with us. We are grateful for your commitment and know it will help us build a strong school community.

The following week, students continued to learn about their new community and about what it means to be a middle schooler at S2. We shared our key values and beliefs, classroom routines, behavior and academic expectations. We accomplished the following goals:

1. Building Community – We dedicated time for students to get to know each other in a safe, structured and positive environment, including learning about how we interact and represent S2 in the larger community of NYC.

2. Building Student Voice – We gave students an opportunity to explore personal interests and meet other like-minded community members.

3. Introducing Technology – We showed students how to use computers and online S2 accounts safely and properly.

4. Introducing Academic Programs – We immersed students in workshop experiences that previewed the literacy, math, Primetime and Forum curriculums.

One highlight of orientation week was creating and signing the S2 Bill of Rights. Together we decided which rights would help us to be our best selves. We invite you to come see it displayed in our front hallway. We also took a trip to see behind the scenes at Citi Field.
