Dos Amigos at School in the Square is an elementary school program dedicated to providing each student with the tools and support to become lifelong learners.
We are focused on building strong educational and social-emotional foundations for our youngest learners through dual language programming, creative hands-on learning and deep explorations of the attributes of successful students.
Elementary students attend school 8:30am-3:30pm; our after-school program is available 3:30-5:30pm.
Designed for grades 1-5 students to master English and academic competencies first with core academics delivered daily in English with structured support for those who need it. Daily 90-minute Spanish-language classes delivered by dedicated Spanish-language faculty are designed for speaking and understanding Spanish through classroom workshopping sessions, structured support and extensions as needed, and cultural explorations that start by examining our own neighborhood heritage and its rich and diverse resources.
Our students explore and take ownership of the attributes of successful learners by exploring a specific International Baccalaureate “Learner Profile” attribute each month and applying that attribute throughout each day. Seeing the ways they intrinsically possess and develop these attributes creates an empowering culture that celebrates curiosity, integrity, responsibility, accountability, being a self-starter and other traits of successful learners.
Creative, hands-on learning abounds for Grades 1-5 through lab-based science and integrated visual art, music, theater, and PE, culminating in the annual musical in partnership with Disney Musicals in Schools!
Before- and After-School programs provide family support, enrichment activities and opportunities to build social relationships.
Our students develop a love for reading through guided leveled, small groups; read-alouds, and independent reading.
Our students participate in guided writing, shared writing, letter writing, and story writing.
Our students develop mathematical understanding in stages through real-world, hands-on experiences.
Students engage in science through a program that blends hands-on investigations, literacy-rich activities, and a deep dive into scientific concepts that allow for rich discussion and analysis.
Community-sustaining and culturally responsive curriculum.
Through STEAM, movement, art, and music, our students organize, construct, explore, investigate, create, imagine, and interact with the world around them.
in creative play from the stories they read, write, and hear.
to be our future scientists, artists, builders, and leaders.
to learn and care about their community.
For all elementary grades except K (which has alternating days of Spanish and English), we have teachers focused on English throughout the day, and Spanish-language teachers who provide 90 minutes of daily Spanish immersion. In Spanish-language class, we develop essential language skills and apply project-based learning that takes students into our neighborhood community to explore its many resources and use our Spanish.
This dual language approach allows us to ensure students master English, followed by mastering Spanish. As children progress in Spanish, we add more Spanish to their mornings. Our teachers dedicated to English will similarly monitor each student’s progress in English using a variety of assessment tools so they can offer targeted support and enrichment.
Students learn Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) skills like self-awareness & management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
Through our International Baccalaureate Learner Profiles, all students focus each month on a specific trait exemplified by successful learners, such as "curiosity." Teachers facilitate morning meetings and other activities to explore these traits with the goal of having the children see and understand how they use these traits themselves in their daily lives both inside and outside of the classroom.
We also offer multiple resources for students and families including counseling support.
All classes are co-taught, with two teachers in each classroom, plus specialist teachers along with the co-teachers for certain subjects. Our approach also focuses on frequent small-group learning with teacher facilitation .
We are proud to offer our students a true summer camp experience, with a program that rotates between art, sports, field trips, and much more.
